Full name

Optimierung der Bohroperationen für Geothermieprojekte durch realistische Echtzeit-Simulation (Optimization of drilling operations for geothermal projects through realistic real-time simulation)

Funding period:

05/2019-10/2022

The overall objective of the proposed project is to reduce the production costs of deep drilling for geothermal energy by preparing drilling projects to a much greater extent than is possible today according to the state of the art. A desired effective drilling process is in part considerably hindered by discontinuities in the rock, such as the fault zones frequently encountered in geothermal drilling. Discontinuities in the course of the rock are a significant uncertainty factor in the planning and execution of drilling operations. The proposed project provides a planning and monitoring tool for geothermal projects on the basis of a drilling training simulator, with which drilling related costs can be significantly reduced. In the course of the project, the focus of the outlined development work is on the acquisition and input of drilling data to improve existing models, the development of new software modules for the simulator, the verification and calibration of the software models and the simulated drilling of critical depth sections of planned geothermal boreholes, which then allows the adjustment of drilling parameters and borehole paths, an intensive training of drilling personnel and further technical recommendations for the actual drilling operation.
